American Society of Safety Engineers – Nashua, NH

This week, November 27, 2012, we exhibited at the ASSE (American Society of Safety Engineers) regional conference in Nashua, NH.

As a past President of the Boston ASSE Chapter (1995-1996), this is always one of my favorite trade shows. I get a chance to catch up with old friends, some of whom served on the Board with me.

We featured the complete Draeger product line at this show. Attendees were impressed by Draeger’s advances in sensor technology for both portable and fixed gas detection. As the largest world wide manufacturer of gas detection, Draeger has the resources and expertise to patent dozens of innovations.

Some of the new Draeger portable gas detectors have 5 year warranties on the oxygen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide sensors – this is astounding to people who are used to replacing the sensors in their instruments every 12-24 months (at a cost of $ 150-$ 250 per sensor!).

Draeger’s fixed gas detection group has also introduced many breakthrough in sensor technology – true predictive maintenance on electrochemical sensors, infrared sensors with multiple calibration curves on the transmitter, and carbon monoxide sensors that aren’t affected by the presence of hydrogen.

National Safety Council Conference

We’re in the midst of “trade show” season – mostly trade shows where we’re an exhibitor, but also some that we attend.  I recently attended the National Safety Council (NSC) conference in Orlando, FL.  I’ve been attending this conference for more than 20 years, and have seen a lot of changes. This has always been a large conference, with hundreds of exhibitors.
Over the past few years the number of attendees, and the number of exhibitors, has dropped significantly, in correlation to the overall health of the economy.  This year the conference seemed more vibrant, with more attendees and exhibitors – hopefully a sign that the economy is finally on an upswing. In terms of new products and new technology, there were a few interesting products that we’ll be adding to our offerings, but not many.
The largest trend at the NSC (and other major trade shows) is drive to commoditize the industry.  From the large distributors who want to make every product look the same, to the suppliers from China, India, Pakistan, and a host of other countries who want to do the same, the “dumbing down” of the industry is a continuing trend.
It’s unfortunate that products that protect people from hazards –  ranging from dusts to chemicals to heat to electrical to impact – are often being sold like pencils and paper.  They look alike, they’re the same color, they must be the same.  That’s not the case with most safety products.  You need to understand the hazard, and then have concrete test data for the product you’re selecting for someone to use, to provide an adequate level of protection.

National Safety Conference – Orlando, FL, Oct 22-23

I’ll be attending the National Safety Council’s 100th Conference and Expo in Orlando on October 22 and 23. This is one of several national conferences that I attend every year to keep up to date on new regulations, new products, and trends in the industry.

We’ll also be exhibiting at several conferences in New England in the next few weeks. Stop by and say hello if you’re attending, or is you’re just in the area.

Expo runs from October 22-24.

NEAIHA Conference – Norwood, MA

We exhibited at the annual NEAIHA all day conference earlier this week in Norwood, MA and featured several new products.

  • The Draeger xam 5000 gas detector is now available with 5 year sensor warranties on the oxygen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide sensors – attendees at the conference were shocked that any manufacturer is able to offer this. Traditional sensors need to be replaced every 18 months – 24 months. The xam 5000 works with the xzone system – the xzone is a base station with a 120 hour battery, a wireless mesh network, and an led warning systems. When an xam 5000 is placed into an xzone the system can be used for perimeter monitoring, hot zone work, and confined space applications.
  • The new RKI Eagle II has all of the features of the original Eagle – robust pump capable of sampling from over 100 feet, ppm/percent combustible measurement, an array of sensors, and the ability to measure up to 6 gases simultaneously – in a smaller, lighter package with newer battery technology.
  • The newest version of Gasmet’s portable FTIR series, the DX4040, continues to impress industrial hygienists with it’s unique capabilities – 25 gases can be measured at a time down to ppb levels without any cross-interference issues. Great for indoor air quality assessments, leed studies, hazmat/spill response, and measuring gases with low ppm exposure limits.  The DX4040 can also be used to identify unknowns.  Lab level detection in a portable instrument.

MA Association of Hazmat Technician’s Conference

We exhibited at the Mass. Assoc. of Hazmat Technician’s (MAHMT) conference last week, September 19-21, 2012, in Plymouth, MA. We featured the Gasmet dx4040 portable FTIR instrument. This instrument is perfect for a hazmat technician because it can identify unknown gases at lower levels than any other portable FTIR instrument.

The attendees were amazed at the detection limits of the Gasmet unit, particularly in relation to the Smith’s GasID that many were familiar with or had used. The Gasmet unit identifies unknown gases that are present, and has the capability to quickly scan a database of over 5000 chemicals to identify the unknown gases. The Gasmet unit can measure in intervals as small as 5 seconds.

A comparison of detection limits for some common chemicals:

GasID LOI* Gasmet LDL**
hydrogen chloride 140 ppm 0.20 ppm
ammonia 60 ppm 0.13 ppm
methylene chloride 23 ppm 0.10 ppm
benzene 95 ppm 0.13 ppm
acetone 24 ppm 0.07 ppm

*LOI is limit of identification, **LDL is lower detection limit – both are the level at which the instrument can accurately identify the chemical.
